CE Marking ("Conformité Européenne") is the mandatory conformity mark for products sold within the European Economic Area. It is a manufacturer's declaration — self-assessed for many product categories, or assessed by an EU Notified Body for higher-risk ones — that a specific product meets every applicable EU harmonisation directive or regulation. This is a completely different system from ISO management-system certification, with no connection to IAF accreditation.
Why CE Marking Is Different From Everything Else on This Site
Everywhere else, London Cert describes IAF-accredited ISO management-system certification. CE Marking works on an entirely different basis: it's a legal EU product-conformity requirement, assessed against specific product safety, health, and environmental "essential requirements," not a voluntary organisational credential. Depending on your product's risk classification, the assessment route is either manufacturer self-declaration (Module A) or mandatory third-party assessment by an EU Notified Body — a conformity assessment body specifically designated by an EU member state to the European Commission under that particular directive.
A Notified Body is not the same thing as an IAF-accredited ISO certification body. Being IAF-accredited to certify ISO 9001 does not make an organisation an EU Notified Body — that's a separate, directive-specific designation. London Cert Ltd is not itself an EU Notified Body; where your product legally requires Notified Body involvement, we help you identify that requirement precisely and coordinate access to an appropriately designated body.
What Does CE Marking Actually Require?
Most CE-marked products fall under three to five separate directives or regulations simultaneously — for example, a wireless medical monitoring device would typically need to satisfy the Medical Device Regulation, the Radio Equipment Directive, and the EMC Directive all at once, and missing any single one invalidates the entire marking. The standard process: identify every applicable directive/regulation, run the conformity assessment each specifies, compile a Technical File, issue the EU Declaration of Conformity, and affix the CE mark.
What This Means for Indian Exporters
- CE Marking is not optional for covered product categories — affixing the mark to non-compliant products is prohibited under EU Regulation (EC) No 765/2008
- Non-compliance risks EU market bans, mandatory recalls, and significant fines
- Importing under your own brand transfers legal liability to you if the manufacturer's technical file is deficient
- A "substantial modification" — including some firmware updates — can re-trigger the entire conformity assessment process
Never confuse CE Marking with UKCA (the UK's post-Brexit equivalent for the Great Britain market), the Eurasian EAC mark, or Swiss equivalents — they overlap in structure but are legally distinct systems for different markets.

Up to DateWhat exporters say about London Cert's CE Marking support
Verified reviews from Indian manufacturers we've helped access the EU market.
London Cert was upfront that they're not a Notified Body, and helped us find the right one for our machinery product while handling everything else — technical file, directive mapping, the works.
Our electronics product needed CE Marking under three different directives at once. Their gap analysis caught a requirement our previous consultant had missed entirely.
First time exporting to the EU and the whole directive landscape felt overwhelming. London Cert broke it down clearly and got our Technical File and Declaration of Conformity properly compiled.
