ISO 22002 is a series of standards specifying Prerequisite Programmes (PRPs) — the basic hygiene and operational conditions (cleaning and sanitation, pest control, maintenance, supplier management, personal hygiene, site security) that form the operational foundation of food safety, supporting ISO 22000's Clause 8.2 requirement. It is not independently certifiable. On 29 July 2025, ISO published a significant overhaul of what had previously been the ISO/TS 22002 series — for over a decade, the series existed as Technical Specifications (a lower formal status than full International Standards), each covering a different part of the food supply chain separately, which led to duplication and inconsistency between sectors. The 2025 revision upgraded most parts to full International Standards and introduced a new unifying framework standard, ISO 22002-100:2025, which consolidates the common prerequisite programme requirements shared across the food, feed, and packaging supply chain into a single base document. Organisations now apply ISO 22002-100 together with the relevant sector-specific part for their operations — for example, ISO 22002-1 for food manufacturing, or the equivalent part for catering, packaging manufacturing, transport and storage, or feed production.

We want to be completely clear about this rather than let the "ISO" branding create confusion: ISO 22002 defines requirements that support Clause 8.2 of ISO 22000:2018, but it is not itself a management-system standard with its own independent accreditation scheme. When your prerequisite programmes are assessed, they are assessed as evidence within your ISO 22000 (or FSSC 22000) audit — the certificate you receive says "ISO 22000" or "FSSC 22000," not "ISO 22002." Any provider suggesting otherwise is describing something that doesn't exist in the accreditation system.
